Belbin is a psychometric tool based on extensive research into how team performance can be improved through the understanding of the roles that need to be fulfilled for any project to be successful.

A team role as defined by Dr Meredith Belbin is "a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way." Belbin® Team Roles includes 9 clusters of behavior each of which is termed a team-role and each team-role has a combination of strengths and allowable weaknesses.
Belbin® is based on the carrying out a self-perception inventory questionnaire from which a report is created to show individual preferences for each of the 9 Team Roles. Most people have 3 or 4 natural roles which can be used appropriately depending on the given situation it is very unusual to only display one characteristic.
Before arriving for a team building day the team would need to carry out a questionnaire. On arrival a Senior Belbin Practitioner would facilitate a group discussion of Belbins strengths and allowable weaknesses, making the most of the Belbin self perception report and how to use this information to improve productivity and performance in the work place.

Understanding why individuals do the things they do in a positive light will help the team to be more open, allowing more creative ideas and opinions. This in turn will lead to increased mutual respect and increased morale.
